On January 9th, 25 university professors attended the course 'Research Methods for Biological Sciences'.

"

It covers topics of experimental design applied to the biological sciences.

The course was given by Professor Herminio Paredes Valencia, a PhD student of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences with a specialisation in Plant Breeding at the National University of Colombia, Palmaria, and was aimed at interdisciplinary groups of teachers interested in experimental research, from the Faculties of Agricultural Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Livestock Sciences and the Distance Learning Unit.

The workshop consisted of an introductory training on the design of agricultural experiments, focusing on how to choose the most appropriate design and the relevant statistical analyses, as well as the most important practical aspects of data analysis.

This training covered the topics: Research and the scientific method, Basic concepts in experimentation, Observations or data, Types, Frequency distributions, Standardisation, Parametric and non-parametric data, Variation and variance decomposition, Analysis of variance and separation of means for the main experimental designs in agricultural research, Correlations and regressions (simple, partial and multiple), SAS® routines; for the main experimental designs, Principles of Multivariate Statistical Analysis, among others.

The course lasted 40 hours and its objective was for the participants to apply all the knowledge acquired in the various research projects they carry out in their academic activities and to share it with their students.
