In the community engagement project on cacao productivity, UTEQ and the Prefecture of Los Ríos visited the 1 de Agosto Association to assess progress in agroecological practices and sustainable production.
During the event, it was observed that the producers, together with students from the UTEQ Agronomy programme, applied various strategies to improve soil quality and optimise cacao production. Among the actions implemented, the preparation of organic fertilisers, biols, and pyrolysis acid stood out, which were used as natural fertilisers in the plantations.
For the production of biols, the farmers utilised local inputs such as livestock manure, molasses, and nettle, which helped reduce costs and strengthen the sustainability of the process. These practices were enhanced thanks to the technical assistance provided by the university and the Prefecture, which contributed to improving crop performance and health.
Moreover, the cacao plants used in the project were grown in the Ecoinvernadero (Eco-greenhouse) at the La María Campus, built jointly by the Prefecture and the UTEQ Faculty of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences. This space allowed the development of plant management and reproduction activities, ensuring their quality before being handed over to the producers.
The members of the 1 de Agosto Association expressed their satisfaction with the progress made, highlighting that the collaboration between academia and the government sector has been key to the sustainable growth of cacao production in the region.
With such initiatives, UTEQ and the Prefecture of Los Ríos reaffirmed their commitment to the development of the agricultural sector, promoting the use of sustainable and environmentally friendly technologies.
