Within the framework of an agreement between the State Technical University of Quevedo and the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG), the cocoa production process is being developed.

To be delivered to farmers in the province of Los Ríos through the Coffee and Cocoa reactivation project.

This project is the responsibility of the Empresa Pública de Producción y Desarrollo de la UTEQ (Prodeuteq EP), through its technical researchers.

Gabriel Liu-Bá, responsible for the project on behalf of Prodeuteq, indicated that the commitment is to deliver 231,000 cocoa plants (National and CCN) to the MAG. "So far we have 160,000 plants that will be delivered to the Ministry in the next few days," said Liu-Ba.

Liu-Ba added that students from the Environmental, Livestock and Agricultural faculties of the UTEQ have participated in this work, with the aim of strengthening their knowledge through field practice.

In the development of this project, positive results have been obtained, such as an excellent germination percentage, a high percentage of budding, which translates into a plant with characteristics such as: health, vigour, free of pests and diseases, desirable for farmers in the area of the province of Los Ríos.

The genetic material to develop these plants came from the existing cocoa clonal gardens in the experimental farms "La María" and "La Represa", which belong to the UTEQ.
