The research project 'Evaluation of chitosan derivatives in the sustainable production of vegetables in an organic farming system' is being developed at the UTEQ.

The project is under the direction of Dr. Juan José Reyes Pérez, with a research team made up of Dr. Marisol Rivero Herrada, and students from the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences: Erick Leonardo García, Cristian Andagoya, Arturo Solórzano and Jazmín Coello.

The aim of the research is to evaluate the use of chitosan-derived oligosaccharins in the germination, growth, yield and quality of vegetable fruits.

These versatile bioproducts have stimulating properties in accelerating plant germination, growth and development.

Likewise, it is hoped that the results obtained will offer greater economic viability to organic cultivation that is more environmentally friendly and safe for human health.

Among the most significant results obtained is the publication of 4 scientific articles, 2 of which are published in the International Journal of Agriculture and Natural Resources, indexed in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR) and SCOPUS, belonging to the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.

This project is in line with the food sovereignty strategy of the Plan Toda una Vida 2017-2021 in Ecuador, which refers to the need to replace the use of agrochemicals that maintain their persistent residual in water and the environment, through the use of bio-inputs for agricultural production that guarantee healthy and safe food for humans and are environmentally friendly.
