The community outreach project "Cultivation of native inland fish and Tilapia in Geomembrane ponds to improve the nutrition of the rural population".

It is environmentally friendly and easy to implement. Through it, training is provided to people belonging to farming communities for the production of inland fish.

This project was born as a solution to food problems due to the low economic resources of the communities in rural areas, and the production of these fish allows them to feed themselves healthily and at the same time to be able to create some kind of enterprise.

This activity has been implemented in six sectors of the canton of Mocache, benefiting a total of 90 people. In the communities, fish are cultivated in ponds with movable geomembranes, and the fish are fed mainly with commercial concentrate.

Jorge Rodríguez and Marlene Medina, teachers-researchers of the UTEQ, are in charge of this project which has allowed to increase the per capita consumption of fish meat in the rural population, which is currently below 7 kilos, while in developed countries it exceeds 30 kilos, and in this way improve the quality of life of the participants and their families.
