With the aim of improving the economies and living conditions of the rural populations of Mocache, the UTEQ and the GAD of Mocache are carrying out the project.

"Cultivation of native continental fish and tilapia, in geomembrane ponds, to improve the food supply of the population of the rural area".

The project is being developed for the benefit of small agricultural producers in the Bella Sombra, San Felipe and Pajarito areas, and its main objective is to cultivate 1500 tilapia in the farms of the aforementioned sectors, and that they manage to integrate the breeding, to achieve greater efficiency of their land and labour, as it will integrate the family in this work.

The work, in the technical part, is under the responsibility of the research professors of the UTEQ Engineers Jorge Rodriguez, Roque Vivas Moreira and Marlene Medina, who assure that the fish breeding project aims to achieve the articulation and application of competitive strategies in the traditional production of cocoa, corn, bananas, and some livestock.

The development of fish farming with a set of technical and training actions based on the elaboration of methodological guides, informative talks, field days, among others, constitutes an innovation in agricultural production. In addition, the project is designed to substantially improve their economies because it is an extra income, easy to market and implement, it is quickly assimilated to be transferred even to the families who collaborate with their tasks and activities, for the benefit of all participating households.

At the end of the project, the aim is to have strengthened local capacities, sustainable commercial articulations and tools that will contribute to stimulate the value chains of fish farming production in the populations mentioned above, the researchers added.

A few weeks ago, researchers from the University of Quevedo and the mayor of Mocache, Leandro Ullón, handed over a geomembrane pond for the fish farming project in the Bella Sombra area of the Mocache canton.
