The British journal Bioinformatics, one of the world's leading journals in the field of Bioinformatics (Informatics applied to Biology), has published a scientific article.

The article was carried out by Cristian Zambrano Vega, lecturer at UTEQ, together with researchers from the University of Málaga (Spain).

The article is entitled: "M2Align: parallel multiple sequence alignment with a multiobjective metaheuristic", and presents a new computational tool for the Multiple Sequence Alignment of biological sequences, one of the most interesting topics in the field of Computational Biology. The tool is based on a multi-objective algorithm that optimises three alignment quality metrics at the same time: protein structural information, percentage of fully aligned columns and percentage of residues; it also reduces the computational time and effort required by other multi-objective optimisers, thanks to the exploitation of the capabilities offered by modern architectures based on multi-core processor clusters and; compared to other classical tools commonly used by biologists today, it allows obtaining a better quality of alignments based on the three defined metrics. In addition, the professor together with the same research group of the University of Malaga have managed to publish three more articles in journals indexed by the Web Of Science this 2017: International Journal of Intelligent Systems (located in the second quartile JCR with an IF of 2.05), Progress in Artificial Intelligence and in Bioinformatics and Biomedical Engineering. The lecturer Cristian Zambrano is about to submit his PhD Thesis in the Department of Languages and Computer Science at the University of Malaga, product of a compendium of 5 scientific publications indexed in the JCR, 2 participations in international conferences and 5 regional publications.Bioinformatics is located in first place in the Google Scholar ranking with an h-index of 105 and in third place in the JCR ranking with an impact factor of 5.766 in the area of Mathematical and Computational Biology.
