Cristian Zambrano, professor at UTEQ, obtained his PhD in Software Engineering and Artificial Intelligence at the University of Málaga, Spain.

He achieved an outstanding qualification and thus received the Cum Laude Mention.

The thesis with which Zambrano achieved his doctorate (Ph.D) deals with the topic "Metaheuristics of Multiobjective Optimisation applied to Phylogenetic Inference and Multiple Sequence Alignment". The research was tutored by Antonio Nebro and José Aldana from the Department of Languages and Computer Science at the University of Malaga. Zambrano said that as a result of his research, several computer tools have been obtained to tackle problems under a multi-objective optimisation approach, whose source code and results are published in public repositories for free distribution in the scientific community. The subject of his doctoral thesis is based on the optimisation of two problems in the field of Bioinformatics: Phylogenetic Inference and Multiple Sequence Alignment, using multi-objective metaheuristics; and is supported by six scientific publications, three articles published in first quartile journals (Q1): Bioinformatics (IF 7.03, Ranking 2/57), Methods in Ecology and Evolution (IF 5.708, Ranking 13/153) and in the International Journal of Intelligent Systems (IF 2.929, Ranking 31/133), one in the journal Progress in Artificial Intelligence and two participations in international conferences: European Symposium on Computational Intelligence and Mathematics and the International Work-Conference on Bioinformatics and Biomedical Engineering, both works published as book chapters. Cristian Zambrano is a Systems Engineer, graduated from UTEQ, and now works as a lecturer in the Faculty of Engineering Sciences.
